Lipoma Removal

Lipomas are common, benign (non-cancerous) growths made up of soft, fatty tissue. They typically develop just beneath the skin but can be deeper, and can appear anywhere on the body. While they are usually harmless, lipomas can sometimes become uncomfortable or a cosmetic concern.

What is a Lipoma?
A lipoma is a slow-growing, soft, and usually painless lump that moves easily under the skin when pressed. They vary in size and often have a rubbery or doughy consistency.

Common Features
-
Soft and Mobile: Lipomas are generally soft to the touch and can move slightly under the skin.
-
Slow Growing: They tend to grow slowly over months or years.
-
Size: They can range from small lumps to larger growths several centimetres wide.
-
Usually Painless: Most lipomas are not painful unless they press on nearby nerves or have become inflamed.

Who Gets Lipomas?
Lipomas can occur in people of all ages but are most commonly found in adults between 40 and 60 years old. While their exact cause is unknown, they may have a genetic component and sometimes run in families.

When Should a Lipoma be Removed?
Although lipomas are typically harmless, you may wish to have one removed if:
-
It causes discomfort or pain
-
It’s growing or changing in size
-
It affects your appearance or confidence
-
There is uncertainty about the diagnosis
