Effective Treatment for Thread Veins on the Legs

What is Microsclerotherapy?

Microsclerotherapy is a safe and effective medical treatment used to remove thread veins (also known as spider veins), typically found on the legs. These tiny blood vessels lie close to the surface of the skin and can appear red, blue, or purple. While harmless, they can cause cosmetic concerns for many patients.

The procedure involves the injection of a specially formulated solution (sclerosant) directly into the affected veins using a very fine needle. This solution causes the vein walls to collapse and seal shut, after which the body gradually reabsorbs the vein.

Who is it for?

Microsclerotherapy is ideal for people who:

  • Have visible thread veins on their legs

  • Are generally healthy

  • Do not have significant underlying varicose veins

  • Want a minimally invasive solution to improve the cosmetic appearance of their legs

Before treatment, a full consultation and medical assessment is carried out to determine suitability.

What to Expect During Treatment

  • The procedure typically takes 30–45 minutes.

  • A very fine needle is used to inject the sclerosant solution into the veins.

  • Most patients report only mild discomfort, similar to a pinprick or stinging sensation.

  • No anaesthetic is required.

  • You can return to normal activities immediately after treatment, though compression stockings may be advised.

Aftercare and Results

  • Treated veins may appear bruised or darker before they fade.

  • Results become visible gradually over 3–8 weeks, with optimal improvement seen over time.

  • Multiple sessions may be required depending on the extent of the veins.

While microsclerotherapy significantly improves the appearance of thread veins, it does not prevent the formation of new ones.
